Cancer is a hard diagnosis. It’s harder when you need to go away for treatment. It’s hard when it’s the love of your life fighting for their life.

Carla Coahran and her husband, Brian, have been at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota since December as Brian undergoes cancer treatments, including a stem cell transplant. Back home, her school family has been receiving updates and they hope the community will come together to benefit this family and teacher who has been touching the lives of East Washington students through math and science for more than 40 years.

East Washington Middle School is holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser and silent auction to benefit the Coahrans on Saturday, May 19, at the EWMS cafeteria. The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $8 and children 10 and younger are $5.

There will be live music performed by teachers Troy and Melanie Smith. Organizer and sixth grade teacher Rosa Snapp said students have been bringing items to include in gift baskets and area businesses have also been donating items. Snapp said Friday donations for silent auction items are still welcome. Contact her at rsnapp@ewsc.k12.in.us for more information.

Snapp said the school has been receiving updates from the Coahrans throughout the past six months.

“She’s always been really positive when we touch base with her to see how she’s doing,” Snapp said. “It’s been a rough time, but they try to keep a good attitude.”

Snapp said the school held a similar fundraiser a few years ago when a student, Trinity Goodson, was going through cancer treatments. The event was a success and the school decided to hold a similar event for the Coahrans.

“We hope to come together as a school and community to show support and that we’re here for her as well,” Snapp said. “She’s been here more than 40 years, so she’s touched many, many lives.

“She’s a remarkable teacher and we love her. She inspires all of us. She teaches next to me, so it’s something to live up to, teaching next to a legend. We all look forward to her coming back.”
