Looking for an early afternoon Valentine’s Day treat? The IU Symphonic Band will perform at Salem Middle School auditorium at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, thanks to the IU Center for Rural Engagement.

Admission is free.

Concert goers can expect a variety of music, from concert standards to new music in order to showcase the sounds of the the band.

Salem Band Director Bonnie Harmon said after with the concert, the 8th grade and high school bands will join the IU band for a private side-by-side workshop, going through the spring concert selections to prepare them for their performance.

“[Opportunities like this are] very meaningful to me because our students need to hear outstanding groups perform,” said Harmon. “This gives them something to aspired to, something to strive for; and what better way to help train the future music educators at IU than for them to work with real students in the school setting? For the community, it is exposure to fine music and the sound of a mature ensemble. Opportunities like this demonstrate that music study continues beyond high school.”

Harmon said she hopes as many people as possible will attend the concert.

“I know 1:30 in the afternoon is not an ideal time for all, but this is the first effort in providing these concerts,” she said. “We hope to have many more so folks who wish to experience fine musical performances can do so at a variety of times and in multiple settings.”
