SHS Science Olympiad team performs at regional, heading to state

The Salem High School Science Olympiad team competed in the Bloomington regional last Saturday, Feb. 2, and placed 4th out of nine teams. The team's score qualified for them to participate in the state Science Olympiad on March 16 on the campus of Indiana University.

"We are very proud of our students," said John Calhoun, one of the science teachers at Salem High School. The team finished just 12 points behind Floyd Central and Columbus North, who tied for 2nd place.

Science Olympiad has 23 events covering all aspects of STEM.  Salem's team finished 1st in three events:
• Disease Detectives with Aiden Minton and Hannah Walker
• Forensics with Hannah Walker and Kelly Mount
• Water Quality with Hannah Walker and Kelly Mount

The team had three second place finishes:
• Sounds of Music with Rebecca McKinley and Alyssa Hammack
• Protien Modeling with Samantha Calhoun and Aiden Minton
• Fermi Questions with Jax Vogt and Elijah McKinley

The Salem team also had three 3rd place finishes:
• Anatomy and Physiology with Kaitlynn Colglazier and Evan Shelby
• Codebusters with Jax Vogt, Kelly Mount and Elise Tally
• Write it Do it with Elise Tally and Rebecca McKinley
