Fancy Fox Creations creates unique gifts

When Laura Young’s mom bought her a Cricut machine, she never dreamed her hobby would turn into a side business.

Young is a full time nurse who works nights and she began playing with the Cricut and trying to figure out all the things she could do with it when she came across a technique for making unique designs on metal cups.

“I just saw a cool cup and decided I was going to learn how to do it,” she said.

A Cricut is an electronic cutting machine that looks similar to a printer. Young said she is self-taught and just joined online groups to learn about it and the different techniques.

“The cups are more complicated, but I really like doing them,” she said. She has been making them for about a year and a half.

“I really didn’t expect the business to blow up like it has!”

Fancy Fox Creations is the name of her business and can be found on Facebook and Instagram.

She mostly takes custom orders, but said when she isn’t making a special request, that is when she gets to try new techniques and get creative.

Her favorite design?

“All things glitter!” she laughed, adding that her husband, Jeremy, doesn’t like the glitter so much.

“I work out of my home, so I’ve been banned to the garage!”

She said she makes lots of unicorn and mermaid designs for her customers.

Her cups range in price from $35 to $55 and all are made from stainless steel cups that keep things hot or cold. She has various sizes of tumblers, as well as coffee mugs.

She said she also can “dress up” cups for people that they already own.

Young said Fancy Fox Creations is her “me” time.

“With working nights, I’m still up at night on my nights off, so this is my alone time,” she said.

Managing the business on the side of her full time job as a nurse and as a mom, is the most challenging aspect of the business. She said the turnaround time on the cups is not quick.

“I have a lot of patient customers!” she said, adding that most of her business is local.

“I also have several loyal, repeat customers.”

Young said she would love to be able to do Fancy Fox Creations as a full time job, but she doesn’t see that happening anytime soon.

She participated in the spring shopping spree at the fairgrounds and this past summer, she was a featured artist at Salem Apothecary. Those are the only two shows she has done, but said she has signed up for the fall shopping spree at the fairgrounds in October, too. She likes doing the shows and talking to people about her work.

Anyone interested in ordering from her may do so through her Facebook page.

Young is a 2003 graduate of Salem High School. She is married to Jeremy and has one son, Rylan.

Young is one of the many women who will be featured in an upcoming section about Women in Washington County, which will be published in November.
