During a recent Salem School Board meeting a patron spoke out stating that GKN Sinter Metals is being bought out.

“We heard through the grapevine, and it’s been a very good one because I’ve Googled it, that GKN is being bought out,” said community member Janet Paynter. “What are you going to do if they close with these taxes? All these unemployed employees from GKN?

Board member Mark Abbott said a company closing is not in the control of the school board.

“It’s all over the internet,” said Paynter. “GKN is being bought out. They are talking about dissolving the Salem plant.”

“They mentioned dissolving the Salem plant?” asked SCS board member Steve Motsinger.

“We’ve heard that,” said Paynter, adding that GKN has six divisions and Salem is the smallest one and also the most productive. Salem has 460 full-time and 88 temporary and co-op employees.

Upon contacting the company, the following statement was given, “GKN Powder Metallurgy is a high performance business that is leading the way in digitalization and innovation,” said Paul Cook, VP Program Launch. “GKN has however decided that the future success of the business can be best secured with a new owner. GKN plans to work with any company it is looking to divest with to ensure a smooth transition. GKN has a proven record of finding the right owners so we thrive with fresh investment and focus.”

We will have more information about the company as it becomes available.
