New restaurant opens west of town

Gary Dever is not new to the food industry. In fact, he has had his hand in the profession since high school.

As a junior at West Washington, he was encouraged by a teacher at South Central Vocational School to apply as a short order cook at Salem Lanes. He was taking a commercial cooking class at the time. Dever said he went in to talk to them and got the job. After graduating high school in 1984, he spent many years there as a cook and manager during the 1980s and 90s and eventually opened his own business in Pekin. He ran Hannah’s Restaurant for six years before closing it this past Christmas Eve.

Dever is now the proud owner of Mulberry Grill, the new sit down restaurant located on West Mulberry Street in the building that once housed El Toro’s restaurant. He said the restaurant serves burgers, fries, shrimp, steak and more.
