Schneck Medical Center has expanded its Salem services, opening its new physical therapy facility last week.

“We at Schneck are certainly committed to improving the health of the communities we serve and that absolutely includes the residents of Salem and Washington County,” said Warren Forgey, Schneck CEO. “We’ve been next door for a number of years with primary care and over the last several months, it was evident we needed to expand our services. We were certainly in need for rehab services and wanted to bring those services to Washington County and we’re so happy to do that.”

Approaching a year and a half ago, the space the new rehab center now fills, along with the clinic next door, was filled with more than a foot of water following the May 19 flood in 2017.

“The water didn’t stay very long, but it’s amazing what a little water will do to a lot of fairly delicate medical equipment,” said Forgey. “After that, we had a lot of inquiries from folks in the area, asking if we were going to rebuild. We had to replace a lot of equipment, rebuild the space, but it didn’t take us long to answer that question. We were absolutely going to rebuild and return to Salem and Washington County because we’re committed to the area.”

Susan Zabor, Vice President of Clinical Services at Schneck, said she was excited to bring rehab services closer to home for Washington County patients.

“We know that when you all get sick and need to feel better, there’s nothing worse than having to travel an hour to get that done,” she said. “We’re very committed to the community and bringing that close-to-home care for you all … With Schneck Family Care next door, this is really just adding that next layer of care for the people here in Salem, so we’re very excited about that.”

She said the facility will work with those suffering from arthritis to muscle sprains to workplace injuries, joint replacement and athletic needs.

Director of Rehabilitation Services Holly Wischmeier said Schneck provides physical rehabilitation for Salem athletes at no cost, with physical therapist Mallory Myers.

Her staff, Lance Tape, Myers, and Hannah Walton have more than 10 years of experience, along with Wischmeier, who’s been working as a physical therapist for nearly 25 years.

“We have a fairly broad knowledge base in our specialties and we work well as a team,” said Wischmeier. “… We work closely as a team and with our providers to ensure you get very good care close to home.”

“It’s exciting to see Salem growing,” said Tara Kritzer, Marketing Director for the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve seen so much change and growth.”
