The Salem Walking Path is about to receive much need repair work.

Almost two years ago, the 2015 Awareness Washington County Class decided to make improvements to the trail with solar lights to provide lighting for evening use. Since then, the lights have been broken due vandalism and bad weather.

The group didn’t have the money to make repairs and were trying to decide what their next move would be.

During the Washington County Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday, Walmart Personnel Manager Brad Gilbert, announced that Walmart has decided to take the $10,000 they received from the Helen R. Walton Award earlier this year, and donate it to AWC. He said they want to invest the money through the group to do repairs for the trail’s lights, as well as additional electric work and updates with security cameras.

Karen Libka, who was a member of the 2015 class and has been involved with the trail project, said replacement lights are being ordered and research is being done on security camera options.

John Jones donated $1,000 toward repairs after the first round of vandalism.
