The Salem City Police Department is seeking donations as it raises funds to purchase another K-9.

“We are wanting a K-9 on nights because we do not have access to a dog at night and it would greatly benefit us on traffic stops and search warrants,” explained Officer Chad Webb, who would handle the dog.

Webb said the department’s goal is to purchase a dog trained only in narcotics detection.

“As a captain of the Salem Police Department and a resident of Washington County, I know that there is a definite need to always be moving forward to make the city and county the safest it can possibly be,” said Webb. “I work night shift, when a lot of illegal narcotics are being brought into our community. With increased awareness, the K-9 will hopefully serve as a deterrent to drug trafficking in our community and county.”

The dogs are very expensive, around $20,000 for the dog, training, equipment and kennel.

Webb said a large retail store has promised to donate $8,000. “We still need to raise around $10,000,” he said.

The police department has established a Go Fund Me account. So far, 13 people have donated a total of $1,130 over a 22-day period.

To donate, visit the Go Fund Me page (search Purchase of a new K-9 for Salem PD), stop by the city police department, or mail a check with K-9 in the memo line, to Salem City Police, #38 Public Square, Salem, Indiana 47167.
