Fair continues

Ian Rosenbaum and Clayton Kelley show in the All Other Breed-steers class during the cattle show on Tuesday, July 7.

The 4-H fair officially began Thursday evening, July 2, with the Fashion Review. 4-Hers turned in projects on Sunday during two different time slots, by alphabet, to avoid overcrowding. Judging this year was closed, meaning members didn’t know how they did on their projects until the official opening of the 4-H building on Tuesday morning.

Dairy cattle and dairy beef were the first to enter the show ring after being the first to try out the new cattle barn. The sheep show followed on Monday evening. This year, each species were brought to the fairgrounds on the day they showed and were taken home after the show, making way for the next day exhibitors.

On Tuesday, at noon, the poultry show took place in the commercial building adjacent to the fur and feathers building. This was done to allow safe social distancing for 4-Hers and their families.

The beef show was held in the show ring, starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. This included the County Born and Raised class. Senior awards were also handed out.

The crowds included mostly family members, who grouped together by family units, being mindful of the social distancing suggestions. All the kids who entered the show ring were required to wear a mask. Even though the masks may have made the job of showing a little hotter, some of the 4-Hers added some fun by having farm themes on their homemade masks.

Wednesday, the showing continued with the rabbit show and the swine show.

The showing ends with the goat show on Thursday at noon and the supreme showmanship contest at 6 p.m.

Although faced with unusual circumstances, the 4-Hers and all those involved have certainly held true to the 4-H motto of making the best better.
