#FurryFriendFriday pets

Zoot, Hoss, Catherine the Great and Titon are all waiting for you at the shelter!

Dogs

• "Sheba" is a 2-year-old Mastiff mix, about 60 pounds and needs to gain a few. She was abandoned with "Jax" for about a week after her previous owners moved and didn't take the dogs with them. Likes: televised tennis, Christmas lights, hot dogs. Dislikes: raw broccoli, Furbies, being abandoned.

• “Mhera” is a 3- or 4-year-old, female shepherd mix who’s not great with young children and has no interest in other dogs, but she does know how to sit and beg and walks well on a leash. Likes: alone time, nature documentaries, when things go her way. Dislikes: goldfinches, artificial sweeteners, people on Facebook who can’t make a post without mentioning the essential oils/dietary supplements/acne creams they sell on the side.

• "Titon" is a 1-2 year-old male boxer mix, a happy, active boy. If you would like to meet Titon, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: Christmas cookies, snowball fights, sniffing at the presents under the tree. Dislikes: coal in stockings, poorly breaded fish sticks, soggy toys left outside in the snow.

• "Jacques" (pronounced "Jock") is a middle-age, male terrier mix. May be best as an only child. Likes: soft and warm napping spots, a squirrel-free yard, super hero movies. Dislikes: blinky lights on trees, squirrels, sliding on slippery floors.

• “Hoss” is a male pit bull, 2 years, who has been waiting at the shelter for several months, wondering why no one seems to want him. He’s fine with other dogs but absolutely not fine with cats. About 60 pounds. Very friendly, loves everyone he meets, and is always up for a ride in the car. He’s very strong and has a lot of playful energy. He’ll need a home with a fenced yard and no small children. If you would like to fill out an application for Hoss, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: hot dogs, bratwursts, steak. Dislikes: cats, when someone steals his spot on the couch when he was only going to be up for a minute, getting wet.

• “Barnaby Jones” (AKA "Chip") is a 2- or 3-year-old beagle mix who had a pretty horrific and untreated case of fleas, but his hair is back and he's looking quite handsome. Very social and playful, about 40 pounds. If you would like an application for Chip, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: Taco Tuesday, flea heartworm preventatives (proper care in general, really), beef jerky. Dislikes: willful negligence, fleas, various other pests.

• “Sami” is a 2- to 3-year-old female beagle mix, turned in because her owner was moving to an apartment and couldn’t keep her. She is heartworm positive. About 45 pounds. Likes: spoonfuls of peanut butter, pretzels, rides in the car. Dislikes: hot sauce, rice cakes, violent TV shows.

• "Nell" is a female Lab mix, 4 or 5 years old, around 40 pounds. Found in a dog trap for killing chickens. As she's underweight, it's possible she was going after the chickens because she was hungry. She doesn't seem to have a high prey drive and is very sweet-tempered. She gets along with other dogs and doesn't seem to have an interest in cats. Likes: chicken, steak, pork chops. Dislikes: being hungry, traps, people who litter.

• "Sashi" is a female basenji mix. Likes: yodeling, trampolines, corn. Dislikes: Angry Birds, drone warfare, knock-off Disney movies.

• “Calla” is a pit mix, 2-3, brought in with another dog who had a skin problem from neglect. Her skin wasn’t in as bad of shape, but she would like to find someone who will take care of her. Likes: chicken nuggets, romping outside, going for walks. Dislikes: thunderstorms, puddles (could get her feet wet), Frank Sinatra.

• "Koda" is a male husky mix, 2 years, about 60 pounds. The family who surrendered him said he is housebroken. Likes: snow, prancing in the snow, being a drama queen. Dislikes: having to come inside from the snow, getting his paws wiped off, The Establishment™.

• "Sansa" is a female shepherd mix. Likes: lemon cakes, naps, really good barbecue. Dislikes: dry hamburgers (she'll still eat them, but come on, burgers aren't that hard), mustard, being woken up before noon.

• Another "Hoss," this time, a male shepherd mix, 2, kicked out of the house by jealous Yorkie siblings. His humans tried to make it work, but the Yorkies weren't having it. If you would like an application, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: Scrolling through his human's Twitter, cheesecake, rampant organization. Dislikes: when the Pinterest button takes you to the blogger's whole Pinterest account instead of saving that recipe to your board, when commercials on the radio repeat twice in the same commercial break, bad driving.

Cats

• "Apollo" and "Artemis" are black cats, siblings who were brought in with their mother. They're about a year old. Like: knocking things off of any raised, flat surface they can find, dipping their paws in water instead of drinking like normal cats, reminding others that ancient cultures once worshipped cats. Dislike: canned tuna that isn't fair trade, climate change deniers, lint.

• "Hera" is a mother cat, black, came in with her offspring. Likes: a little peace and quiet, podcasts, yoga pants. Dislikes: when a heated political debate breaks out at the dinner table, when people leave dirty dishes next to the sink while she's washing dishes, ants.

• "Catherine the Great" is a female, Maine Coon mix, with a calico pattern on the back of her neck. Purrs constantly. Surrendered due to a divorce. Likes: snuggling, amusement park rides, LARPing. Dislikes: snow, rain, when she forgets her coffee in the microwave and it gets cold.

• "Oreo" is a male black and white cat. Very long, but gorgeous and very social. Likes: reading drama on Twitter, Animal Planet, dinner parties. Dislikes: dog people, getting his whiskers wet, action movies with impossible stunts.

• "Zoot" is a long-haired, gray and white kitten, 10 weeks. Likes: chasing the little red dot, nature documentaries narrated by David Attenborough, hot chocolate. Dislikes: the fact they changed the American editions of the Harry Potter books, getting their claw snagged on the carpet, frogs.

• “Kore” (AKA “Cake”) is an adult cat who was brought in with untreated ear mites and has one ear smaller than the other. Likes: programs that teach ASL in schools like any other language course, music with melody, peaches. Dislikes: the state of the national budget, gas prices, static electricity.

• "Teddy Bear" is a male cat with lots of personality. Likes: being snuggled (but on his terms), watching uncomfortable weather from the comfort of the couch through the window, ending dust bunnies. Dislikes: carrots of any kind, unexpected ghosts, the existential dread he feels once weekly.

• "Jenny" is a 7-year-old calico cat, front declawed. Likes: watching out the window, binge-watching CNN, reading The Atlantic. Dislikes: when outside the window is boring, people who yell, election season.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Monday through Friday, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
