Dogs

• "Jake" is a brown, Lab mix, about 6 years old and around 50 pounds. He's housebroken and seems pretty good with other dogs. Likes: naps, lazy games of fetch, long rides in the car. Dislikes: movies where the dog dies, banana peels, lint.

• "Iris" is a 4-year-old, female shepherd mix, around 45 pounds. She seems good with other dogs. Likes: vegging on the couch, pizza, trashy TV. Dislikes: people who whine about movies on Twitter because they didn't like an insignificant aspect of it, individually wrapped snacks, when anyone tries to make her wear hats or clothing.

• "Lacy" is a white and black beagle mix, about 6 years old, surrendered with another dog when their human died. Lacy seems to need to be an only dog. A lot has happened to her recently. She weighs about 45 pounds, but could do to lose a pound or two. For an application, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: artisanal bacon, regular bacon, violin music. Dislikes: karaoke, celery, people who think going to brunch is a character trait.

• "Finley" is a 7- to 8-year-old, plush-coat, male German Shepherd. He came in as a stray, his coat full of burrs. Unfortunately, he is heartworm-positive, but he's currently undergoing treatment. He was good with other dogs when shelter staff checked him with a dog of similar size. He has a lot of energy, despite his age. If you would like an application for Finley, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: schnitzel, long games of bingo, a romp through the woods. Dislikes: disorder, cabbage, angry voices.

• "Bear" is a male, black Lab, about 2 years old and around 80 pounds. He does very well with people, but doesn't seem to like any canine competition for attention. Shelter staff will recheck him after a while to see if he really does need to be an only dog. He knows how to sit and drop, and will roll over for belly scritches. Likes: belly scritches, ear scritches, filet mignon. Dislikes: wearing shoes, when the squirrels sneak through the small spots he can't get through, when he's muddy and not allowed in the house until he gets a bath.

• "Lenny" is a 1 1/2-year-old, male, collie mix. An Amish family had too many dogs, so they surrendered Lenny. He's a very sweet, laid-back kind of dog. He's fine with other dogs and social. He has a gorgeous, thick, wavy coat. Staff aren't sure what his breed mix actually is, but he's a unique boy. If you would like an application for Lenny, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: scrolling through Twitter for hours, organizing things, reading books on farm management. Dislikes: loud music, being left behind on car rides, fireworks.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Charles Cooper McDaniels" is a male shepherd mix, black and tan, about 40 pounds. Likes: long car rides, rambles through the wilderness, bubble baths. Dislikes: city noise, starless nights, getting incriminating Cheeto dust on his face.

• "Wilcox LeMaster" is a male shepherd mix, black and light tan. Staff say he doesn't look old, but his teeth are worn down. Likes: cake with buttercream frosting, watching the cars go by, chicken nuggets. Dislikes: cake with whipped frosting, helicopters, large bodies of water.

• "Laird Clarence McMontalban" is a male, 1-year-old basset-pointer mix, about 45 pounds. Good with other dogs. Likes: wagging his tail, chasing squirrels, watching the Outdoor Channel. Dislikes: missing his chance to go to Bass Pro Shop, getting bits of stick stuck in his teeth, flies.

• "Mocha" is a 2-year-old male, about 40 pounds. He's scared at the shelter, but staff say he will warm up to people after a while. He seems OK with other dogs, but might be happier as an only dog. He was surrendered because a landlord would not let the family keep him. Likes: property and home ownership, the way his ears stick up, cold cuts. Dislikes: burnt cookies, overcooked pasta, dryer sheets.

Cats

• "Ira McBeans" is a white cat with golden eyes. Likes: watching hours of documentaries on Netflix, reading scholarly journals, competitive gift wrapping. Dislikes: static cling, wool, getting their claws caught on the carpet.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.
