Dogs

• "Willow" (AKA "Shallow") is a female Lab mix, brought in with her daughters. Likes: Reading food blogs but never actually cooking, cardigans, cars with those heated seats. Dislikes: Being cold, mushrooms, pennies (they cost more to make than they're worth).

• “Mhera” is a 3- or 4-year-old, female shepherd mix who’s not great with young children and has no interest in other dogs, but she does know how to sit and beg and walks well on a leash. If you would like an application for this little lady, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: alone time, nature documentaries, when things go her way. Dislikes: goldfinches, artificial sweeteners, people on Facebook who can’t make a post without mentioning the essential oils/dietary supplements/acne creams they sell on the side.

• “Hoss” is a male pit bull, 2 years, who has been waiting at the shelter for several months, wondering why no one seems to want him. He’s fine with other dogs but absolutely not fine with cats. About 60 pounds. Very friendly, loves everyone he meets, and is always up for a ride in the car. He’s very strong and has a lot of playful energy. He’ll need a home with a fenced yard and no small children. If you would like to fill out an application for Hoss, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: hot dogs, bratwursts, steak. Dislikes: cats, when someone steals his spot on the couch when he was only going to be up for a minute, getting wet.

• "Coop" is a male Lab-Dalmatian mix, about 50 pounds. Likes: getting dirty, playing, wagging his tail. Dislikes: having to store digital movies across multiple apps instead of everything being available on iTunes or whatever the Windows version of that is, onions, mustard.

• "Hecate" is a female pit mix, brindle. Came to the shelter full of milk, but the shelter hasn't been able to find her owner or any puppies. Likes: steak, a nice salad, heavy metal music. Dislikes: no easy access to birth control, the rising cost of health insurance, pickles.

• "Bear" is a 1- to 2-year-old Lab mix. Scared at the shelter and will growl when you approach his kennel, but if you get him out, you get kisses (so, worth the growling). Gets along well with calm dogs. Likes: cheese puffs, romping, animal-based Disney movies. Dislikes: when Todd got left in the woods in "The Fox and the Hound," soggy French fries (he'll eat them anyway, though — waste not, want not), frogs.

• "Puck" is a male, beagle mix, about a year old and around 35 pounds. He's an escape artist, which likely led him to the shelter in the first place. He escaped his kennel at the shelter and has now been relegated to a quarantine kennel, which is enclosed. Likes: freedom, chili cheese dogs, wide-open spaces. Dislikes: limits of any kind, the vet, when his blanket gets wrongly rumpled (just let him do it — you're a disaster *doggy sigh*).

• "Pax" is a female red tick coonhound, about a year old. Will not hunt. Sweet girl, with lots of puppy energy. Likes: small and furry animals, tofu, watching decades of ice dancing on YouTube. Dislikes: Slow internet speeds, being underestimated, when she walks around trees and gets sap on her paws.

• "Tilly" is a black and white, female Lab mix. Showed up at someone's house, but the family couldn't keep her. Good with dogs, cats and kids. About 45 pounds. Likes: taking pictures in the silk flower aisle of Walmart like she's in a botanical garden and posting them on Instagram, when people like her pictures on Instagram, getting dressed up pretty. Dislikes: when her ears get itchy, when the Tupperware lids get warped in the microwave, being the third wheel when she hangs out with her friends.

• "Batman" is a male mix, 1-2 years old, around 30 pounds. Came to the shelter wearing a Batman sweater. Likes: the color black, solitude, being disgustingly rich. Dislikes: Superman, gun violence, cackling madmen.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Monday through Friday, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
