Dogs

• "Zoey" is a 2-year-old female, about 35 pounds. May be best with only older children. Likes: bounding, playing catch-a-ball, watching "Cosmos" and anything else by Neil deGrasse Tyson while easing into the evening. Dislikes: when there's no one to play with, stepping in the puddle made from the ice cube she forgot she stole, rubber shoes.

• "Hank" is a chocolate Lab, about 70 pounds, brought to the shelter because he supposedly did not get along with other dogs. The shelter says he had no issues with a bossy female dog they put him with. Likes: hard salami, sharp cheddar cheese, the company of strong, independent women. Dislikes: crowded places, lots of noise, inflatable pools.

• "Daisy" and "Delilah" are Anatolian-Shepherd mix sisters, 1 year, about 45 pounds each. These nosey ladies found their way into someone's house and found themselves at the shelter. Like: building snowmen, building sand castles, collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House charities. Dislike: crass comedy, people who think they have the right to be rude to people because they're older or richer than others, cottage cheese.

• “Mhera” is a 3- or 4-year-old, female shepherd mix who’s not great with young children and has no interest in other dogs, but she does know how to sit and beg and walks well on a leash. If you would like an application for this lovely lady, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: alone time, nature documentaries, when things go her way. Dislikes: goldfinches, artificial sweeteners, people on Facebook who can’t make a post without mentioning the essential oils/dietary supplements/acne creams they sell on the side.

• “Hoss” is a male pit bull, 2 years, who has been waiting at the shelter longer than any other dog on this list, wondering why no one seems to want him. He’s fine with other dogs but absolutely not fine with cats. About 60 pounds. Very friendly, loves everyone he meets, and is always up for a ride in the car. He’s very strong and has a lot of playful energy. He’ll need a home with a fenced yard and no small children. If you would like to fill out an application for Hoss, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: hot dogs, bratwursts, steak. Dislikes: cats, when someone steals his spot on the couch when he was only going to be up for a minute, getting wet.

• "Reese" is a female Lab mix, 1 year, about 45 pounds. Shelter staff say she could use some obedience training. "Instead of putting in the time and effort to help a young dog, they brought her to the shelter. Owner said she is hyper and a runner. Sweet girl. A little time and training and she will be a great dog." Likes: room to run and play, learning new skills, antiquing. Dislikes: long lines, when couponers take all the sale items leaving none for people who only want one or two bottles of shampoo (then sell them on local for-sale Facebook pages), broccoli.

• "Karma" is a pit mix, 3-4 years old, surrendered due to a bad family situation. Despite this, she's very sweet and loving with a cute, little tail. Weighs about 45 pounds. Likes: vanilla frosting (preferably on a cupcake, but will also accept it on a spoon), aromatherapy candles, Enya. Dislikes: spaghetti squash, Ugg boots, mud.

Dislikes: no easy access to birth control, the rising cost of health insurance, pickles.

• "Diva" is a heartworm-positive, 3-year-old pit bull mix. She's undergone her first heartworm treatment and is doing well. Rescue only. She hasn't had a great life and was apparently chained up at some point. She had wounds on her leg and foot from a chain being wrapped around her back leg and digging in. She is calm and quiet and good with other dogs. About 30 pounds. Likes: space to wander alone with her thoughts, someone to snuggle with, ice cream (no chocolate, please). Dislikes: chains, her lack of access to responsible heartworm prevention, email scams.

• "Louis" is a male collie-heeler mix, about 2 years old, between 45 and 50 pounds. Has a pointy snout like a collie and the markings and shape of a heeler. Hesitant for a minute, but very affectionate. Likes: survival reality shows, fresh-from-the-dryer laundry, when free wifi is actually free. Dislikes: potato salad, baths, the way aliens have taken over the History Channel.

• "Gus" is a beagle mix, 2-3 years old, about 30 pounds. He has a deformed front foot, but it doesn't seem to bother him and he walks just fine. He has some flea dermatitis that can be taken care of with flea medication. He hasn't been taken very good care of. His toe nails don't appear to have ever been cut. Likes: when all the leaves fall in the autumn, jumping in the leaves, sugar cookies. Dislikes: pumpkin spice anything, dabbing, French fried onions.

• "Wayne" (AKA "Chubbs") is a male boxer mix, around 30 pounds. He was dropped off at someone's house and the owner never came back for him. The dogs at the new house did not welcome him, so he was dropped off at the shelter. Likes: making new friends, singing along with the radio, cheese. Dislikes: when new dogs don't want to make friends, rap music, pickels.

• "Bruce" is a male, rottweiler mix, about two years old. Has a cherry eye, which can be easily removed when he's neutered. Sweet, squishy boy. Not as tall as a full-blooded rottweiler. Around 55 pounds. Likes: Chicago-style hot dogs (hold the onions), French toast, watching cartoons on Netflix. Dislikes: getting stuck in an existentialism vortex, when he naps so long he wakes up too close to bedtime to do anything productive, radishes.

• "Finchley" is a red tick-heeler mix. Likes: African violets, corn chips, frolicking. Dislikes: angry parrots, carrots, shouty commercials.

• "Thelma" is a middle-aged, black and tan, female hound. Her face looks older than shelter staff are estimating based on her teeth. She was turned in because she was not being taken care of, which probably contributed to her looking older. Likes: vanilla scented candles, a nice lasagna, watching the Discovery Channel. Dislikes: when her tail knocks things off of the coffee table, poor dental hygiene, birds.

• "Charlie" is a hound-pointer mix, about 45 pounds. Likes: pizza, sitting in front of fans to let the breeze blow his ears around, butterflies. Dislikes: when he catches sight of himself in the mirror and — just for a minute — it scares the bejabbers out of him, sticky stuff, cantaloupe.

• "Reuban" is a male boxer mix, brindle and white, 2-3 years old. Sweet, but shy. He's axious while in his kennel, but has more personality in the office where it's quieter. Still shy but coming out of his shell. Likes: quiet days at the lake, chasing bubbles, watching TV shows about cars. Dislikes: bad cable connections, the beeping from the microwave (food shouldn't have to make that noise), celebrity gossip on the news.

• "Francesca" is a heeler-terrier mix, 1 year, about 40 pounds. Likes: comedians who yell everything, over-grilled chicken, those rye croutons. Dislikes: fortune cookies, raisins, spiders.

• "Millie" is a female, chocolate Lab-pit mix, about 1 year old, about 35 pounds. She hasn't been taken care of very well. Her ears have very little hair and she has scabs on both ears. Nonetheless, she gets along fine with other dogs and is a pretty happy girl. She's currently in foster care, so if you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: regular flea, tick and heartworm treatments, when the people leave so she can flip her pillows around pretending she's a juggler in the circus, when she gets the pillows tidied up and she's where she's supposed to be before the humans get home. Dislikes: pineapples in general, ostriches, sad music.

• "Ella" is a chocolate Lab mix, 5, about 45 pounds. Shelter staff were concerned with her sight and hearing. She gets along well with other dogs and if you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com.

• "Chase/Clark" is a shepherd-retriever mix, about 40 pounds, with a beautiful coat and beautiful eyes. Heartworm positive. Likes: organization, weeding, watching DIY videos on YouTube. Dislikes: not being able to complete the projects on the DIY videos, getting dirty, when people litter.

"Lucky" is a male, Lab mix. Surrendered for killing chickens. Likes: playing in the sun, sleeping in the shade, leftovers (preferably from your plate). Dislikes: anything more formal than business casual attire (no ties ever; hard to tie without thumbs), soggy French fries (he'll eat them, but he won't be happy about them), mean, barky dogs.

• "Moses" is a male beagle, 1 year, about 20 pounds. Likes: chasing crickets in the yard, birdwatching, watching movies with horses. Dislikes: actually being in the presence of horses (they are huge), waking up early, tomatoes.

• "Melton" is a male pug mix, about 8 years old, about 25 pounds. He hasn't missed very many meals and has some cataracts, so he's estimated to be at least 8 years old. His age doesn't slow him down much, though. Likes: a good nap, a cool drink, being included in everything. Dislikes: that rap music, people in his yard, being on a diet.

• "Miss Bear" is an Aussie mix, 5 years old, spayed. Probably best as an only child, needs physical fencing as she chases cars, door darter, but good with kids and cats. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she's caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

Cats

• There are several kittens available for adoption. Like: frolicking, pouncing, pretending to be in an ASPCA commercial when people come to adopt a cat. Dislike: when people don't adopt them, getting wet, thunder.

• "Yum Yum" is an orange male cat, 6 years old, neutered, well fed. Likes: boxes, finding an extra piece of kibble behind his bowl, being adopted. Dislikes: having to actually climb into the boxes, when he can see the bottom of his bowl through the food (he's about to starve), static electricity.

• "Quinn" is an orange teenage tiger cat. Likes: reading video game fanfiction, making digital art, when he gets extra hours at work. Dislikes: the Establishment, overuse of commas in online stories, websites that have music start playing automatically.

• "Belladonna" is a female Maine coon mix, front declawed, 3 years old. Likes: being groomed (with permission), fine tuna steaks with a nice risotto, napping in the sun. Dislikes: when dust bunnies stick to her whiskers (so clean up, slave human), humidity, miscalculating the height of counters she wants to jump on.

• "Ameowlia" is a calico cat. Likes: rampant organization, searching for memes on the internet and sharing them with friends on her blog, Fig Newtons. Dislikes: Sandies cookies, techno music, people who think loud cars are cool.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.
