#FurryFriendFriday pets

Two kittens, a black one and a white one with brownish stripes are held by a shelter staff member.

Lots of kittens are up for adoption!

A tan greyhound mix tries to huddle down as best as he can, not looking up, clearly scared

Mackey

A mostly brown dog with pointy ears and white markings cocks his head to the side. He has blue eyes.

Prancer

Two kittens loo, up at the human holding them for the photo. One is a tabby kitten and the other is white with tabby markings.

You know you want a kitten or two.

Dogs

• "Emerson," is a male pit mix, almost a year old, a sweet boy, about 35 pounds. He was surrendered because his family couldn't take care of him. He gets along well with other dogs and would probably enjoy having a friend to play with. If you would like an application for Emerson, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: watching televised tennis, playing fetch outside, playing fetch inside. Dislikes: when ants get in his outside food bowl, ants, sticks that don't have the stamina for chewing.

• "Finley" is a 7- to 8-year-old, plush-coat, male German Shepherd. He came in as a stray, his coat full of burrs. He's good with dogs when shelter staff checked him with a dog of similar size. He has a lot of energy, despite his age. If you would like an application for Finley, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: schnitzel, long games of bingo, a romp through the woods. Dislikes: disorder, cabbage, angry voices.

• "Lenny" is a 1 1/2-year-old, male, collie mix. An Amish family had too many dogs, so they surrendered Lenny. He's a very sweet, laid-back kind of dog. He's fine with other dogs and social. He has a gorgeous, thick, wavy coat. Staff aren't sure what his breed mix actually is, but he's a unique boy. If you would like an application for Lenny, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: scrolling through Twitter for hours, organizing things, reading books on farm management. Dislikes: loud music, being left behind on car rides, fireworks.

• "Onyx" is a female, black Lab mix, about 8 years old and about 55 pounds. She was surrendered with two other dogs by an owner who could no longer take care of them. She has the beginnings of cataracts, but she's a spunky girl, who gets along well with other dogs. She's social and happy. Likes: naughty words cross-stitched with flowers onto throw pillows, rides in the car (especially to the lake), binge-watching "The Golden Girls" and MMA fighting. Dislikes: getting caught in the rain, people who don't recycle, slow internet speeds.

• "Aatu" is an adult, male shepherd-husky mix who was taken in by family members when his owner died. He didn't get along with the other family dogs, so he was brought to the shelter. Likes: pasta with red sauce, a good therapist, a home with air conditioning. Dislikes: pasta with white sauce, summer weather, lizards.

• "Buford" is a 4-5-year-old, male beagle mix, about 30 pounds. He has some hair loss due to fleas, but he has been treated and should be good in a couple weeks. He has finished his heartworm treatment and he's ready for adoption. He's good with other dogs and people, but staff aren't sure about cats. Likes: a really good belly rub, aroo-rooing, sticking his head out the window on car rides. Dislikes: fleas, closed-window car rides, lobsters (the taste, concept and sight of them).

• "Annabelle" is a 1-year-old, female, rat terrier mix, about 15 pounds. She's a sweet, active girl. Likes: making blanket forts, corn on the cob, squeaky toys. Dislikes: when cobwebs get stuck on her tail, baths, totalitarian dictatorships.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Prancer" is a male, Aussie-husky mix, 1-2 years old, about 45 pounds. Has the prance of a husky and beautiful blue eyes. Likes: snowball fetch, karaoke, steak. Dislikes: tofu, thunderstorms, chaos.

• "Mackey" is a grayhound mix, about 3 years old, male, about 55 pounds. Has the softest eyes. He was shaking and uncertain when he first came to the shelter, but he's doing better now and perks up when he's around another dog. He didn't pay any attention to caged cats. If you would like an application, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: quiet placees, tortilla chips, room to run. Dislikes: ducks (all they do is quack and swim around — useless), yelling, getting hair in his mouth.

• "Oliver" is a hound mix, male, between 1 and 2 years old, about 45 pounds. He has a 3/4 tail, which gives him some extra character. He came in as a stray and he's quiet in his kennel. The house he came to had inside cats and he would run from one window to the other to look at them. Staff aren't sure if he was really wanting to come inside and the cats happened to be in the windows or if he was drawn to the cats. He still needs to be checked with his safety around cats. Good with other dogs. Likes: watching cats, counting fish at the pond (bonus points if they're not all the same fish that keep coming into his line of vision), tapioca pudding. Dislikes: strawberry pudding (it's not a thing and shouldn't try to be), lettuce, anyone who tells him his tail is too short.

Cats

• Lots of kittens again. You know you've been thinking about adding to the family …

• "Angelo/Angeline" is a tiger and white, adult cat. Likes: opera, antiquing, knitting. Dislikes: Jackson Pollock paintings (and, indeed, most modern art), Russian literature, poor hygeine.

• "Gerald" is a tiger and white kitten, about eight weeks old. Likes: string cheese, the good kibble, pouncing. Dislikes: cat fights on reality TV, dampness, getting his claws stuck in his towel.

• "Cotillion" is a tabby cat. Likes: dancing like no one's watching, dancing in the rain (when there's somewhere dry to go afterwards), dancing in the street. Dislikes: when someone is watching without letting them know, when E. Burton Russell, IV, puts videos of her dancing on Instagram, when the salmon is overcooked.

• "Stella" is a long-haired, female cat, between 1 and 2 years old, mostly white with some darker patches on her head and tail, currently in foster care. She is an inside cat ONLY. Her head tilts. She has been seen by a veterinarian, but the cause is unknown. It doesn't seem to affect her. She loves to sit in your lap and be petted and is used to being in a house with other cats, big and small dogs, and kids. If you'd like to meet Stella, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com for an application. Likes: sleeping on freshly dried laundry, al dente spaghetti, napping spots near heating vents. Dislikes: stepping on a piece of tape or a sticker, humidity, leaf vegetables.

• "Hilton McFuzzybottim" is a black and white kitten with amber eyes. Likes: feathers, glitter, showtunes. Dislikes: courduroy, static cling, blow dryers.

• "Mynx" is a gray tiger kitten. Likes: using their sad kitten face to their advantage (they're cute and they know it), getting out of their kennel, hunting houseplants. Dislikes: when things they'd like to knock onto the floor are too heavy or attached to the counter, when their friends don't know their Instagram angles and post bad pictures publicly, coffee (smells good, tastes bad. Why? Explain, humans).

• "Contessa Julia McDermitshire" is a gray kitten with faint stripes and a dark tail. Likes: judging your eating habits, sneaking bread, trying to eat plastic. Dislikes: being told not to eat plastic, being informed that bread is not for cats and having it taken away, election season.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.
