Hunsley publishes first book

When Cash Hunsley sat down to write a book about helping men to find their purpose in this life, he had no idea where it was going to take him.

Last year he started mentoring at Salem Middle School. He asked the school counselor for some material to use to help teach the young men about life and making good choices and she said there just wasn’t a whole lot out there for men.

“I discovered that these kids need a direction, not a friend,” he said.

Hunsley, who is a father of three sons, put together his own collection of information and life lessons to work with the students and realized that what he had was working.

“I said, ‘God, they need you. How am I going to bring you in?’” he said. “These guys, all guys, just want to win at life.”

He came up with the idea of using cards as a metaphor, living to get a royal flush. Each of the five top cards means something: 10 card - Living on Purpose; Jack - Raising ‘Sons’; Queen - Elevating Women; King - True Self; Ace - Faith in Jesus.

“The idea became a book out of nowhere!” said Hunsley. “I brought the principles into the school to feed them life and given them motivation to be better.”

It took him five weeks to write the book and one year for it to be published. The book, titled “Suited Up,” has an inspirational tone.

“What’s awesome is it’s not just for 12 year old boys,” he said. “All men need direction. It defines what living is through God’s lens.”

Hunsley said it is a book he is proud of and one he would leave for his sons to learn what a man looks like.

When Hunsley began mentoring, he was working with a very small group, four to five, young boys. A year later, the group has grown to 20-25.

“If you are faithful with a few, God will give you more,” he said. “You never know what a cracked door leads to.”

Hunsley said he already knows what the sequel will be to his first book.

The book can be found on Amazon and it is sold locally at Heaven Sent Gifts on the square.

Hunsley lives in Salem with his wife, Kari, and their three sons: Cross, 5, Banks, 3, and Towns, 1.
