Library to celebrate 200 years of Frankenstein

Frankenstein is coming to life at the Salem Public Library.

Thanks to an arts and humanities grant, the library will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of Frankenstein by handing out free copies of the book to the public. The program is part of the “One State One Story” campaign. In conjunction with the book reading, Children’s Library Director Donna Hurst has planned several events to help commemorate the anniversary.

The first program, Franken Toys, will be held Monday, Oct. 1, at 4:30 p.m. for kids in grades one and up.

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 10:45 a.m. there will be a book discussion on Frankenstein. Another discussion will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 p.m. 

Another kids’ program will be held on Monday, Oct. 22, at 4;30 p.m. This program is Frankenstein is Electric and will focus on electric circuits. It is for kids in grades first and up.

A monster writing workshop will be held at the library at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, for those in grades 6-12.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 p.m., Monique Morgan, an associate professor of English at Indiana University, will visit the library to present a program on Frankenstein.

Pre-registration is required for all of the events and can be done by calling 812-883-5600.

Also going on at the library is the new after school program.

This is for students in grades first through sixth. It is held on Mondays at 4:30 p.m. at the library. Pre-registration is required.

Every week is a different theme including Grossology, Candyland Live!, I survived series and more.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the library is participating in the City of Salem’s Halloween event in the pioneer village. The event will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. 

Toddler Time and Preschool Story Time will begin Oct. 23. Toddler time is for children ages 2 and 3 and will be held at 10:30 a.m. Preschool story time is for ages 4 and 5 and will be held at 11:30 a.m. 

Pre-registration is required for both programs.

On Nov. 12, the library will host its popular princess program. This is for children ages two and up and will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The library is also honoring veterans by asking patrons to fill out a card with information about their honored veteran to  be displayed on their Veteran’s Wall of Honor in the lower level foyer display case. Photos size 4x6” and smaller will also be accepted for display. The veteran’s wall will be up during the month of November.
