State Sen. Erin Houchin to Serve on Study Committees

STATEHOUSE (June 19, 2018) — State Sen. Erin Houchin (R-Salem) will serve on the following interim study committees during the summer and fall to help prepare lawmakers for the 2019 legislative session:

·       Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary
·       Interim Study Committee on Fiscal Policy

Additionally, she will serve on the following board and commissions:

·       Orange County Development Advisory Board
·       Indiana Commission for Women
·       Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana

“As a former caseworker for the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS), I look forward to examining DCS-related issues as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary,” Houchin said. “Protecting the most vulnerable children in our communities is a top priority, and cases must be handled efficiently, delicately and completely. As we study DCS topics and more, I am confident we will find solutions that can be addressed in the next legislative session.”

In addition, Houchin authored Senate Resolution 21 last session, aimed at studying the topic of autism in public education. Houchin said, “I am thankful to the Legislative Council for assigning this topic to the Interim Study Committee on Education. Ensuring all children in our state are given the opportunity to reach their full potential is of the utmost importance, and I am eager to see the results of the committee discussions.”

In the months leading up to each legislative session, lawmakers serve on interim study committees that meet to review the state’s top issues, as identified by the General Assembly during the prior legislative session.

Study committee topics are assigned by the bipartisan Legislative Council, comprised of 16 voting members — eight from the Senate and eight from the House of Representatives.
