A line of storms moved through the area causing wide-spread power outages across the county Thursday afternoon.

Several downed trees were reported, including one blocking North Main Street and another falling on East Washington Elementary School.

Duke Energy, Jackson County REMC and Harrison REMC are all working to restore power as soon as possible.

We will update as more information becomes available.

Update:

Dave Scanzoni, Corporate Communications at Duke Energy Corp., said there are currently 4,600 Duke Energy customers without power in Washington County due to wind damage. That is the majority of their 6,000 customers.

State wide, they have 48,000 customers without service due to the storms.

He said they should have most of the power back on between 6 and 8 p.m. in Washington County.

Update: 9 p.m.

Still no update from Duke Energy.

However, a Jackson County REMC rep says they are working as quickly as possible, but there are many downed trees in Washington County on power lines. They still have 5,000 customers without electricity and are working as quickly as they can, with no estimation of when everyone will have power again. They do expect some customers to be without power overnight, but crews will continue working through the night.
