Rescue workers see to Sarah Weston, 41, Austin, after a two-vehicle wreck at State Road 56 East and the bypass Monday morning.

Rescue workers were dispatched to the intersection of State Road 56 East and the bypass at 10:16 a.m. Monday morning after reports of a two-vehicle accident.

Salem Police Assistant Chief Tim Miller said Sarah Weston, 41, Austin, driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee was on the bypass and struck Johnny Cross, 63, Salem, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet pick-up truck, traveling west on State Road 56 East. Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to extricate Cross from his vehicle.

Both Weston and Cross were taken to St. Vincent-Salem Hospital and Cross was then taken to University of Louisville Hospital with serious injuries. As of 1 p.m. on Monday, Miller said Weston was still being treated at St. Vincent-Salem Hospital.

Reconstructionists from the Indiana State Police were sent to assist in the investigation of the scene and officers from both the City of Salem Police Department and Washington County Deputies worked together during the rescue, along with Salem Firefighters and Washington County EMS.
