Brown to Coach Lions

Mike Brown sits on the end of the bench watching the Lions basketball team in a recent summer league game.

The Lions basketball team has their new head coach just in time for summer workouts. Mike Brown will be on the bench coaching the Lions this winter.
Brown spent last season at Shawe Memorial. Before that he spent 2 seasons at South Dearborn. Prior to his time there he had lengthy stints at both Crawford County and Paoli.
Brown said he wanted to come to Salem for several reasons, including the talent pool as well as being closer to family. “There were two or three factors. This puts me about 45 minutes closer to my kids. I have a stepson that lives in Paoli, a step daughter that lives in Bedford and my son lives in Jasper. That makes it a lot easier for me. I can leave Salem and go see them closer than at Madison. The situation with teaching and coaching, maybe retiring from teaching in a couple years and continuing to coach was something we saw eye to eye on. More than anything the facilities here, the kind of kids Salem has in their athletic programs. We had some real battles when I was at Paoli and Crawford County. I love kids that compete like these kids do, and it’s getting harder and harder to find kids like that. When you do run across it you want to make sure you give that a good look.”
