Road racing returns to the speedway

SALEM, IN, Aug. 20 – Road racing returns to Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery on Sunday afternoon, August 26th, as the Six Sigma Xtreme Roval 100 takes center stage on the tricky half-mile layout.

The 100-lap event for Salem style Front Wheel Drive Stocks utilizes both the infield short-track and a portion of the half-mile high banks.  Drivers navigate the road course, which includes both left and right-hand turns, from the high banked track to the short-track and back.

“It’s not unusual to see cars four and five wide on the high banked portion of the course,” said Salem Speedway general manager Richard Deaton.

The track layout presents a challenge to both drivers and machines said Deaton.

“The Roval road course is a different ballgame.  It demands different techniques, different thinking in both driving and car setup.”

The racing activity on Sunday kicks-off with a 20-lap race on the multi-turn layout that will serve as the championship race for the Salem Front Wheel Drive division.  The non-points Xtreme Roval 100 takes place following the FWD championship race. 

Aaron Seay of Clarksville, Ind., takes a 10-point lead (495-485) over second place Carl Higgins Jr. of Louisville into the final Front Wheel Drive race of the season.  Three-time defending track champion, Jesse Allen (472) of Lanesville, Ind., is currently in third place in the season standings, with Chris Atwood (455) of Corydon, Ind., fourth and Ryan Longshore (379) of Louisville fifth. 

Spectator gates open at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, with practice at 12-noon, followed by the first race at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).
