Safe Rooms

Salem Community Schools opens their safe rooms to the public

Salem Community Schools officially opened their newly constructed “safe rooms'' on Tuesday at 4p.m. The dedication was open to the public.

Kevin Albertson, the Salem Middle School principal, spoke about their room and how it has impacted the community and students recently.

“Most of the funding for the room came from a FEMA grant,” Albertson said. “Having the safe room puts our parents and students at ease knowing that they are there in care of severe weather or an emergency.”

The middle school room is also being utilized as a STEAM Lab. It includes a green room, 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics and other equipment meant to aid in education.

Jessica Morgan, the STEAM Director, explained the uses of the room and its importance.

“Teachers are able to schedule time in the lab to do STEAM activities that help to enhance their lessons. Students can also visit the lab to work on projects,” Morgan said.

This year alone, students have visited the lab to 3D print, laser cut, make projects out of cardboard, paint, build water filters and design and develop musical instruments.

“The safe room at Salem High School is also used daily for the band and choir. It gives these students a place to call their own, while providing them places to practice and store their equipment,” said Morgan.

Morgan explained that the safe rooms at SMS and SHS are important because they create a safe place not only for students, but also community members, whenever the weather becomes distressing.

We are fortunate to have this type of security at all three buildings in our corporation. It is also important because these rooms have dual purposes,” said Morgan. “These rooms are positive additions to our community.”
