Seeking courthouse photo and artistic submissions for display

Decorative renovations to the interior of the Washington County Courthouse will continue throughout the winter and spring months with the goal of those improvements being completed by late spring.  Chris Bundy, who is overseeing the decorative improvements, commented, “Although we have been slowed somewhat by the pandemic and other factors, I believe the progress will be on schedule for completion by late spring.” He continued, “As part of the improvements, we plan to feature a historic exhibit centering around the history of the courthouse throughout the years in the grand lobby and we would also like to include a gallery of submitted photographs and possible artistic renderings of the courthouse for exhibit. If more accepted submissions are received than can be displayed, we could possibly rotate the exhibit from time to time.”

Although there is no monetary consideration, the selected photographic submissions will be enlarged and mounted for display with the name of the individual who submitted it. Submissions may be either mailed to the Chamber of Commerce/Tourism Office, Attn. Tara, 99 Public Square, Ste. 201, Salem, IN 47167 or emailed to the office at: tara@washingtoncountychamber.org. Artistic submissions, as well as other submissions wishing to be dropped off in person, may be taken to the Chamber of Commerce office on the second floor of the courthouse Monday through Friday, when not closed to the public due to COVID.

Improvements to the interior have included period appropriate lighting, decorative and ongoing painting throughout, remodeling of some offices, and the renovation of the old superior court chambers.  Of course, the addition of exterior building lighting and refurbishment of the courthouse lawns and gardens have added greatly to the stately building. Once the majority of the interior renovations are completed, a reception to welcome the community to view the improvements will be scheduled. Most improvements have been accomplished through the help of volunteers and donations from the public as well as with the enthusiastic support of the County Commissioners in bringing new life to the county’s most recognizable historic landmark.
